Video Disk Recorder

PC Hardware

The PC hardware I have chosen to build the Video Disk Recorder consists of the following components:

  • Motherboard ASUS P5A
  • BIOS version 1.009
  • HDD 80GB Maxtor 6Y080L0
  • AMD K6-II 450MHz
  • 128 MB RAM
  • simple VGA card (no X running on this system)
  • Longshine LCS-8038TX network card (using the RTL8139)
  • 3.5" floppy drive
  • 2 Siemens PCI-DVB-S (full featured digital satellite receiver card)
  • 1 WinTV NOVA-S (budget digital satellite receiver card)

The PC Casing

If you're going to run your VDR in the living room, you'll probably want it to blend in with the other video and audio equipment and, most of all, be quiet. I found a PC casing that is both nice looking (see the picture) and very quiet. Unfortunately that casing is no longer available for purchase, so you'll need to search for a suitable casing yourself.

The Remote Control Unit

In order to make the VDR look and operate like any other video equipment I have built a remote control receiver, combined with a display that can be used to show, for instance, the current channel. Of course you can use any other remote control (for example a LIRC based system), or just use the PC keyboard.
